Empirical study of reception during reading of literary texts

As part of the experiment, test subjects have to read 150 short text excerpts of about 50 words each in succession. Meanwhile, physiological data is collected, including eye movements, skin conductance and electrical brain activity (EEG).

Duration: approx. 2.5 hrs.

The experiment has several stages:
1. Preparation: After a Corona rapid test, you will have time to examine the consent form, then the instructors will explain the procedure to you. After that, EEG and EDA electrodes are attached and then the equipment is calibrated. After a test run, we will start with the data collection (approx. 1 hour 15 minutes.
2. Data collection I. Here, you sit on a chair and are presented with text snippets on a computer screen. After some of the text snippets, you will be asked questions (approx. 35-40 minutes).
3. Data collection II. You will then fill out a questionnaire regarding your socio-demographic data and reading habits. (approx. 5 minutes)
4. Final phase. In this phase, you can wash and blow-dry your hair to remove the EEG electrode gel (approx. 25-30 minutes). Shampoo and hair dryer are provided.

Remuneration: 7 € per half hour or part thereof.

Prerequisites: German at native level. All texts presented are in German and it is important that you understand them.

Eye make-up: Mascara and other dark eye make-up will interfere with the eye tracking recordings. We therefore appreciate your willingness to either appear without eye makeup or make use of makeup remover in the LitLab on the experiment day.

COVID safety: We are required to perform a rapid corona test prior to the start of the experiment. Here you can find the hygiene and infection control concept of the TU Darmstadt.
